What is Vocational Education and Training (VET)?
Vocational Education and Training (VET) gives students the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification (Certificate I, II or III) in a wide range of in-demand career pathways, including cyber security, engineering, business and allied health.
Students combine VET with their SACE studies, setting them on a pathway to tertiary study, further vocational education or employment.
VET courses are included as part of a flexible timetable allowing students complete their SACE at the same time. Selected VET studies can replace a SACE subject for a semester or a year.
Why choose VET?
There are many benefits to completing a VET course. Students can:
- develop practical work-related skills that will make them more employable
- gain an understanding of ‘real life’ work environments
- obtain industry specific knowledge and experience before making a commitment to working within that industry
- get a head start in their chosen pathway before leaving school
- gain dual accreditation, as VET achievements can also count towards the SACE
- in some cases, contribute their VET course towards the ATAR required for entrance to university, ensuring their options and pathways remain open. This contribution to ATAR is only eligible upon a student completing a full Certificate III.
VET at Glenunga
From Year 10, students can select VET Skill Clusters – short courses that run for a few weeks to a semester.
From Year 11, students can select a Flexible Industry Pathway (FIP) course which may run over 1-2 years. To select a FIP, a student will need to apply to the VET Leader and provide evidence of some industry immersion. This could be through their Year 10 Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF) subject, work experience, a short VET course, volunteering, part-time employment or related work in a school subject.
Some VET courses offered at Glenunga may be delivered at school, while other courses may be delivered at other schools or training facilities within the area. This means students may need to travel to another learning site as part of their studies. Travel and logistics are the responsibility of the student and family in this case.
